What is a compounding pharmacy?

A compounding pharmacy prepares a medication for one patient from a valid prescription—adjusting strength, form, or flavor when a commercial product is not the right fit. Timing depends on the formula, ingredients, and how complete the prescription is when we receive it. We give a realistic window when we see the Rx—not a one-size promise on this website.

Does insurance cover compounding?

Coverage for compounded medications varies by plan. Call (714) 790-4085 and we will help check your plan before you fill. We do not promise that any specific insurer will pay.

Use the transfer page or call (714) 790-4085 with the previous pharmacy name and prescription details. We contact the previous pharmacy. Online transfer is a request, not an automatic fill.

A manufactured tablet is sold in a few fixed strengths. A clinician may need a dose that is not one of those strengths—too high for a child, too low for an adult who cannot split a tablet cleanly, or a combination that is not sold together. Compounding is how a licensed pharmacist prepares the strength written on a valid prescription, from pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, at one counter in Orange.

Unique dosage forms

Many drugs are sold only as a swallowable tablet. That form does not fit every patient. A child may need a liquid. A patient who cannot swallow may need a troche or a suppository. A topical gel or cream may be written when the clinician wants the medicine applied to the skin rather than taken by mouth. The form is a clinical decision on the prescription, not a menu you pick on a website.

Unavailable and discontinued medications

Manufacturers discontinue products for business reasons, or a product goes on shortage. A clinician may still need that ingredient for a specific patient. In some cases a compounding pharmacy can prepare a patient-specific alternative, provided the product was not withdrawn from the market for safety or effectiveness reasons, no equivalent commercial product is available, and the prescription is valid.

Not every discontinued product has a legal compounded substitute. Strength, form, and whether a commercial product is available all matter. Call with the prescription details and we will tell you whether we can prepare it—or that we cannot. Prescription only.

Taste and flavoring

A medication that tastes bitter is often a medication that is not finished. That is a practical problem for children on a long course and for pets that spit out tablets. Flavoring does not replace the diagnosis or the dose. It is a way to prepare an oral liquid or another form so the patient can take what the clinician already prescribed.

We keep many flavor options for compatible oral liquids, including meat flavors when a veterinarian writes for them. Flavor is noted on the order or at pickup when it matters. We will say if a flavor is not compatible with a formula.

Allergies to inactive ingredients

Commercial tablets and liquids contain more than the active drug: dyes, fillers, preservatives, gluten-containing excipients, and flavors. If a patient cannot use one of those inactives, a manufactured product may be unusable even when the active ingredient is right. Compounding can prepare a formula that avoids an ingredient when the prescription and available materials allow.

“Allergen-aware” means we follow the avoid-list on the Rx and tell you if a requested omission is not possible. It is not a promise that a compound is free of every allergen. Bring allergy notes to the counter. Prescription only.

Veterinary compounding

Animals refuse pills, need tiny doses, or cannot take a human product as sold. With a veterinarian’s prescription we prepare flavored liquids, treats, capsules, PLO ear gels, and other forms the order specifies so the animal can receive the prescribed medicine. Human compounds are not automatically safe for pets; the veterinarian writes the species, strength, and form.

We do not diagnose animals online or substitute a vet’s directions. If a requested flavor or gel is not workable, we say so. Prescription from a veterinarian only.
